hybrid-racing-formula-cold-air-intake-17-21-civic-type-r-fk8
Hybrid Racing Formula Cold Air Intake - 17-21 Civic Type R (FK8)

Hybrid Racing started with a simple question: if they could build everything they wanted into one FK8 intake, what would it look like? It'd make more power through the whole pull, wake up the turbo and induction sound when you get on it, look like it belonged in the engine bay, put the filter within easy reach, and keep up with you as you kept modifying your Civic Type R.

Three MAF housings, seven velocity stacks, several filters, flow-bench testing, 16 material and shielding samples, and 65 dyno pulls later, they had their answer: the Formula Intake. It's Hybrid Racing's formula for what they think is the best intake you can bolt to an FK8.

The first thing most people want to know about an intake is how much power it makes, so let's answer that head-on. Here are three comparisons we ran on the same 2019 FK8, from the most dramatic result to the most true-to-life.

Just Swap It: Factory ECU Untouched

Hybrid Racing started simple. Factory airbox, untouched OEM Honda ECU. Then they bolted on the Formula 76mm Street and changed nothing else. Power jumped from 270.2 to 300.2 wheel horsepower, with no check engine light and no knock correction anywhere in the log. That 30-wheel-horsepower jump honestly shocked them, because modern turbo cars are tightly controlled and a bolt-on intake is supposed to do very little. It isn't 30 horsepower from airflow alone, since the new MAF signal also shifted the ECU's fueling and load math. Even so, it shows how hard the car responded to the swap.

Add FlashPro: Same Base Map, Both Intakes

Next they added Hondata FlashPro and ran both intakes on the same Base Map, before loading any Formula-specific MAF scaling. The curves stayed close through the middle of the pull, then the Formula pulled ahead toward redline. It's a useful real-world middle step, not the final tuned comparison.

Tuned Right: The Honest Like-For-Like

Finally, they set the MAF scaling correctly for each intake and tuned the car around each setup. This is the closest apples-to-apples comparison you'll find, and it's the number to expect on a tuned FK8. The Formula averaged about 7 more wheel horsepower and 8 more lb-ft of torque from 2,500 to 6,800 rpm. More telling than the peak, it made more usable power through most of the pull instead of just touching a higher number up top.

That's the short answer. Hybrid Racing's complete FK8 Formula Intake dyno test lays all six runs side by side and digs into the MAF signal, the fuel correction, the area under each curve, the little calibration details, and our full test method, with interactive graphs you can line up and race against each other.

The Short Version

About 7 more wheel horsepower and 8 more lb-ft of torque on average from 2,500 to 6,800 rpm in the matched Custom Tune comparison

76mm Street housing for most stock and lightly modified FK8s

89mm Race housing for higher-power builds that need more MAF sensor range

Enclosed XLPE airbox with upper and lower outside-air feeds

More turbo, induction, and recirculating-valve sound when you're on the throttle

Filter lifts out through the lid without pulling the airbox

Bolts to factory mounting points with no cutting, drilling, or front-bumper removal

Works with the factory turbo inlet pipe

Which MAF Housing Should You Run?

The Formula comes in two versions. Go with the 76mm Street for a stock or lightly modified FK8, whether your car still has the OEM Honda ECU or you're already on FlashPro. You can install it without tuning, though Hybrid strongly recommends FlashPro or another solution that can set the MAF scaling correctly. Go with the 89mm Race for a higher-power build that needs more MAF sensor range so your ECU and tuner keep measuring airflow accurately. Both versions use the same factory Honda MAF sensor, and only the housing and its matching velocity stack change.

76mm Street

The 76mm Street is the right call for most stock and lightly modified FK8s. It's the housing they used for the comparisons above, and it runs on the factory ECU. If your car's on FlashPro, load the correct Formula MAF scaling so the ECU reads the new intake path properly.

89mm Race

The 89mm Race is for higher-power builds that are bumping into the factory MAF sensor's limit with the 76mm Street, or for cars being built around a bigger turbo and more power down the road. You can tune it properly on a lightly modified FK8, but it gives you more sensor range than that car needs. Around 400 wheel horsepower, have your tuner start watching MAF voltage. Let the datalog make the call, not the power number by itself.

On Hybrid Racing's 433.5-wheel-horsepower shop FK8, the 76mm Street signal hit 4.96 volts and stopped climbing near the top of the pull. The 89mm Race kept that same sensor inside its measurement range. The 89mm Race inlet requires Hondata FlashPro or an equivalent solution that can apply the matching MAF calibration.

Fitment And Installation

The Formula fits every 2017 through 2021 Honda Civic Type R FK8, including the 2021 Limited Edition. It takes the factory MAF sensor and reuses the factory mounting points, intake seal, and rubber grommets. No cutting, drilling, or front-bumper removal required.

Most installs take one to two hours with basic hand tools. To fit the lower air feeds, you'll safely raise the front of the car, pull the driver-side front wheel, and fold back the inner fender liner. Our detailed install guide walks you through every step. The included coupler fits the factory turbo inlet pipe and measures roughly 69mm inside where it meets the inlet, so if your car has an aftermarket turbo inlet, double-check its connection size before you order, since you may need a different coupler.

What Comes In The Kit

XLPE airbox and lid

Elliptical velocity stack matched to your chosen housing

Red reusable oiled-cotton filter with a flat-top element

Your choice of 76mm Street or 89mm Race MAF housing

Silicone coupler that fits the factory turbo inlet pipe

Two lower outside-air inlet tubes

Reflective heat shields

Stainless clamps and mounting hardware

2.5mm hex key and installation card

OEM-style split loom for the factory MAF harness

Your factory MAF sensor and wiring move to the new location without cutting a single wire.
